In 1941 the allied forces launched the "Crusader" operation to support the English Eighth Army against the winning German forces of General Rommel, known as the "Desert Fox". The operation's mission was to bring supplies to the English troops. The convoy included the Thistlegorm, which on the night between the 5th and 6th of October was sunk by the second squadron of Heinkel 111, a bomber from the 26° Geswader Camp based in Crete. The entire load is still on board the ship: many types of ammunition, cases of Lee Enfield MK IV rifles, Wellington boots, tracked armoured cars, BSA WDM20 motorcycles, Matchless G3L and Norton 16H, Bedford, Morris, Ford and Tilling Stevens trucks. There are also airplane wings and many other objects. It is a real "underwater war museum". The Thistlegorm was one of the protagonists of the documentary "The World of Silence" by Jacques Cousteau in 1955. A truly "historical" diving experience!
